That’s how Toni Monique Taloa described caring for her sister in her home in Buena Park, California. Her sister, who was born with hydrocephaly and cerebral palsy, was stuck in a nursing home until Toni took charge of her care.

Now Toni, who also cared for her grandmother, makes sure her sister lives a full and happy life, cared for by someone who loves her. But Toni is clear that her work caring for her sister is just that: work. “I view home care as a profession. I believe we work like professionals.” And she knows, like all AFSCME members do, that the incredibly difficult sacrifices she makes for her family and her community, deserve respect. Toni never quits.
